The scholarship was established in memory of the late Dr. Wardell G. Nichols, Principal of Hillside Elementary and High School, Heath Springs, South Carolina on November 12, 2016 by the Hillside High School 2017 Scholarship Committee.  This committee had a mission to perpetuate the historical legacy, educational traditions and cultural heritage of Hillside High School.

Dr. Nichols served a 15 year tenure as principal (1955 – 1970) at Hillside Elementary & High School.  He was an advocate for students excelling in education and writing personal messages to all the graduating seniors telling them that there is no end to learning.

Initially, the Hillside High School 2017 Scholarship Committee had agreed to offer ONE (1) $500 scholarship to assist in college expenses for the 2017-2018 school years. The Scholarship Committee has agreed to offer again TWO (2) $500 scholarships to assist in college expenses for the 2019-2020 school years.

Presently, the Hillside High School 2017-2019 Scholarship Committee along with its pledges and donors has now awarded scholarships ($500) to graduating seniors in the Lancaster County School District for three consecutive years.
